Natalie Imbruglia는 음반으로 데뷔하기 전 3년간 연기 활동을 합니다. 그리고 1994년 런던으로 이사하여, 이듬해인 1995년에 레코드 사와 계약을 맺게 됩니다. 그리고 1997년, 대망의 데뷔 앨범인 <Left of the Middle>을 발표합니다. 이 데뷔 앨범의 대표 타이틀 곡이 바로  ‘Torn’ 입니다. 이 곡으로 그녀는 수많은 어워드를 휩쓸었을뿐더러 이후에도 이 곡이 <워크 투 리멤버 A Walk to Remember>를 비롯해 여러 영화와 CF 주제곡으로 사용돼 지속적으로 전세계에 이름을 알렸습니다.
